Making Holiday Garlands for less

Holiday garlands can be pricey and I have a hard time bringing myself to drop $$$ on items that spend about 10 months of the year in storage. So, I often find myself looking for ways to recreate expensive-looking decor for far less–and garlands are no exception. Here are some tips for making those swoon-worthy, plush and detailed evergreen garlands and swags for less!

The Base: Inexpensive Garland

The key to creating fullness without breaking the bank, is to start with an inexpensive base garland. I like to use these from Walmart. They are less than $3 and the wired sprigs work great for attaching other decorative items with ease.

If you want a super fluffy garland, use two of these–intertwined together.

Adding Texture: Complementary Garland

Add a complementary garland with slightly different texture. This will add to the visual interest, make it look a bit more natural and add to the expensive-look you are going for. I like using this one because the needles on the springs are longer and more delicate.

Feeling Fresh: Add fresh greenery

I like to add fresh greenery because it provides another layer of natural beauty, but it’s also an inexpensive (especially if you find it in your backyard) way to fill the garland and make your home smell divine.

Get Lit: Making it merry and bright

I tend to buy things that are not pre-lit. While you may save time in the first few years from not having to add lights, they will eventually go bad and you will be stuck cutting them out and replacing them. Secondly, by adding my own lights, I control not only the number of lights, but also the placement and the cost.

After you have wound garlands together and hung in place (and after you’ve added the natural greens), add the lights. I like to wrap in an “S” pattern on the front of the garland–rather than spiraling around the entire garland. This focuses the light to the portion of the garland you see and makes them easier to remove.

Go Extra: All about the Accessories

Just like any good outfit can be made great with the right accessories, the same theory applies to holiday decor. This is your chance to create a unique, one-of-a-kind look by simply adding sprigs of berries, pine cones, other garlands, sticks, etc.

Check your local craft or big-box store for inexpensive picks or berry bushes. If you want to spend a bit more, shop local gift or floral shops for unique garlands like the gold magnolia one pictured above.
