How to Create Three Halloween Looks Straight from Your Closet

I don’t know about you, but I love pulling off a great costume with things I found in my closet, stashed in a drawer or stored on a shelf. It’s like the thrill of the hunt–only I prefer to hunt clothing rather than animals. And, maybe you need a little Halloween costume inspiration or perhaps are feeling the crunch to come up with an idea (and not wanting to spend the money to order something you’ll probably only wear once). So, here’s how to create three Halloween looks straight from your closet.

These looks are all created using a romantic peasant blouse and encourage you to be creative with props and get into . . . well . . . character. It’s not required, but it certainly adds to the overall “look”.

Hippie

This costume is easy and depending on how far you go, could also be considered super chic. Many elements to the “hippie-look” are totally “in” this fall–fringe, flare jeans, tie-dye and layered jewelry.

Speaking of tie-dye, feel free to swap out the peasant blouse for a tie-dye t-shirt.

To really rally behind your costume cause, make sure you are toting a protest poster and flashing the “peace” sign. Oh, and use phrases like “far out”, “right on” and “groovy man”.

Pirate

If you don’t get excited about a sword and an eye patch then you can just walk the plank. To get into character, drink some rum, practice saying “ARRGGGG” and watch a little Pirates of the Caribbean.

Pair that peasant blouse with a pair of joggers (to get the full “buccaneer” effect”) and knee-high boots. Or even black skinny jeans or paper bag pants would work. Throw on a belt (over your shoulder and at the waist), sash and blazer.

Extra points for a pirate hat. I fashioned mine out from a floppy straw hat using some safety pins. Then I stuck a feather in it. Not like Yankee Doodle . . . but definitely like Jack Sparrow.

No hat, no problem. Just drink more rum and put a scarf on your head. Hell, even a bandana would work.

Oh, and don’t forget the one hoop earring, heavy eyeliner and maybe a tattoo or two (real or fake, I’ll leave the ink to you).

Fortune Teller

I love this one the most, mostly because the props are so fun. The key to pulling off this look is a head scarf, printed skirt or pant and lots of jewelry.

It also gives you a chance to bust out that printed kimono you bought this summer.

As for the props, a crystal ball is a must. If you don’t have one just hanging around, use a snow globe, similar to this one. It’s plastic and lightweight and you can reuse for the holidays.

And don’t forget the Tarot cards — print a few fakes on cardstock and cut them out or use a regular deck of large-size cards. Or, get some actual Tarot cards and get all the answers to your future.
